How Much Paint for 1,000 Square Feet?

The number of gallons needed for 1,000 square feet depends on the product's coverage rate and the number of coats. The square footage alone does not determine the final quantity.

The basic formula

Gallons needed = area × coats ÷ coverage per gallon

For example, at a planning coverage rate of 350 square feet per gallon, 1,000 square feet with one coat is about 2.86 gallons before any additional allowance. Two coats would be about 5.71 gallons before an allowance.

Coverage is product-specific

Paint labels can list different coverage rates, and actual coverage can vary with surface texture, porosity, color changes, application method, and the product itself. Use the coverage printed on your exact product whenever possible.

Do doors and windows count?

If your 1,000-square-foot figure is the total wall area, you may need to subtract large openings that will not be painted. If the 1,000 square feet is already the final paintable area, do not subtract them again.

Why two coats changes the estimate

Two coats roughly doubles the coverage requirement because the same surface area is being covered twice. Primer or specialty coatings can create additional material requirements.
